It is, ultimately, a grim read, but an utterly engrossing and intricate read too. Much like the tidbits reconocimiientos French which luckily I understand and Hungarian which unfortunately I don’t which seem thrown in to impress the reader more than anything else.
Wallace’s style of dialogue recojocimientos lifted straight from this book, even down to the ellipses used to indicate a character’s silence. He planned to enter the ministry, but early on had found the Christian system suspect.

Gaddis certainly doesn’t wear his knowledge or sources lightly, and a cynical person could say this untethered recondite regurgitation may have been employed to mask laziness or limited understanding on the part of the author. I think this book is interesting only in the historical part it played in influencing other writers, but as a standalone piece of art, it does not hold much appeal. Yes, it is often demanding and requires rapt and unfailing attention, but it contains incredible pleasure.

This is an incredibly confusing book and to be honest, the annotations didn’t actually enlighten me. Gaddis infuses his novel with an awareness that he himself as an artist and his novel as an artistic reconocimjentos are subject to the same rules and criticisms as those of his characters.
