Hollinghurst has the uncanny ability to turn even base, human emotions into beautiful, lyrical prose which time and again made me stop and wonder at his incredible skill. Her behavior is so implausible because Hollinghurst has given us no sense of what deep issues with her father holllinghurst family would have made her act as she does.
Gerald Fedden’s world, the politics and the socializing, was so convincingly rendered that one reader wondered “if you’d been to one of Jeffrey Archer’s parties”. For the television adaptation, see The Line of Beauty miniseries.
Between the lines
I loved the innovative, inspiring description a favourite line: We read to save our mouths from burning, we read to slow the ulcers. It’s about thinking that you are accepted and welcomed, and then suddenly those that you thought loved you, turning and suddenly you can see them for what they are.
This book confounded such baseless expectations, and the final part in particular is very moving. Quotes from The Line of Beauty. Nick has a vague sense that this isn’t a satisfying way to live, but he’s mesmerized by the glare of so much money and sensualism and terrified by the prospect of loneliness. About 50 pages into it, my mind cried, hollinghudst a Be Forewarned. Amazon Drive Cloud storage from Amazon. She realizes that Nick is having an affair with Wani when the two of them spend time at the Feddens French country home and urges him to be careful after her godfather dies of AIDS. He recalled how one tabloid headline greeted his Man Beauyt Prize by announcing, “Gay Sex Wins Prize” — “a rather different award” from the famous literary prize itself, the author reflected.
This element of the novel provides a solemn filter for the rather frivolous happenings of the Feddens, and as we move closer to the climax, the juxtaposition of the privileged life and the bias towards the gay community, the narration wlan on a more serious tone.
By portraying the narrator of the book, Nick Guest, as a gay man in an ostensibly straight world, Hollinghurst achieves an oblique angle on the people he observes, moving considerably more than an inch from the axis on which they would ideally see themselves. The important simplification to avoid was the moral one — awarding praise and blame to characters for their behaviour.
And when I thought of reading more of this novel, I got really excited. Like is this any better than playing games on my cellphone? The preceding section ended with Gerald Fedden apparently triumphant, seeing the prime minister to her car after his party. If Hollinghurst’s previous novel, The Spellwas the slightly embarrassing story of a last-ditch, middle-aged dalliance with ecstasy, The Line of Beauty is a sour celebration of the drug that kept the economy booming: What has happened in the three-year gap in the narrative?
It took me a little while to get into this book, but when I did, I couldn’t stop. Absolutely rated it liked it Recommended to K. America’s National Book Award went to an equally explicit gay book way back inan autobiography called “Becoming a Man.
What’s not to love? I hope this book lives up to its promising opening. I would argue he is likely a bit of both. Review “Almost perfectly written. The Line of Beauty is perfectly explicit about sex when it wants to be, but by this point readers don’t need to be told what has happened. In the end, he might have learned that beautiful things don’t necessarily make for beautiful people.

Jul 16, Julie Christine rated it liked it Shelves: When the news of Nick’s sexuality came out in the papers, it wasn’t as if everyone in Gerald’s circle didn’t know Nick was gay. Oh, but I only complain because otherwise I’d melt!
Should be on every must read list! All this should produce a complex reception for the Booker winner. Oh, I was fawning and drooling all over this book, and it was frankly pathetic.

I believe I might have read this when it first came out or maybe I am remembering the BBC adaptationbut if anything, the decade since its publication has only enriched the experience even more. He probably will, and maybe this time he’ll deserve it.
