Analogies to the Vlad the Impaler, known more widely as Vlad Dracula, were apparent to me. You can stand behind Druss, even if you don’t agree with him, and his search for the healing stones and his way of life is one to respect. Only the stolen Eyes of Alchazzar–mystic jewels of power–will save Druss’s dying friend, then unite the Nadir tribes against the evil of the Gothir.

He had been going to the games but had got I liked this book although it was hard to follow as it is the 7th in a series that I have read no other books.

A nobleman from an infamous family, an imperial legionary officer, a fighter, and a right proper bastard of a man, Captain Ben Stiger finds himself reassigned from a crack legion to the rebellion simmering in the South. The tensions and racial conflict are excellent. On the other hand was Druss, who saw things in black and white, and Gemmel in this book puts forward a good argument for this point of view, which is unconventional as most people support the shades of grey point of view.

Druss, or the main character, finding himself amid a large scale battle of impossible odds and somehow winning the day.
