This collection reveals glimpses of all of that, in addition to wit, social commentary and wellefan.

Each story bursts with imagination and feeling but Lord Dunsany retains control of his fecund heart and tempers each with powerful, meaningful language and purposeful structure. At the time Dunsany was writing, fantasy worlds were uncommon – maybe a bit of William Welkeran here epsada there. Dunsany is verbose, comically poetic, confusingly ironic, naive and jaded all at once.

This week, I went to a museum about the ancient Near East, and realized that his stories often remind me of translations of ancient epics. I will not disagree with those who say that the story “The Fortress Unvanquishable, Save for Sacnoth” may just be the earliest swords-and-sorcery tale.
