However, I feel so strongly about this book that I am compelled to contribute my opinion anyway. I think it depends on your beliefs as to how you view the ending. But it is the end of the story is the most uplifting part of the story because it is left to the reader’s mind, and heart.

I, too, read Dream Boy in one sitting and, upon finishing, felt bereft, devastated for days afterward. Although I suppose we can read into the ending what we will. I can’t even get my mind around it. He clearly understands the pain and confusion of budding love, and his present-tense narrative adds urgency and a touching immediacy to his tale.

I didn’t like the ending because it left me feeling unsatisfied. It hovers over the story like some malevolent spirit and that is the impression this story left on me.


This distance mirrors the same distance that Nathan needs to be able to survive what he has been through. The writing is excellent, well worth five stars or more, but I just didn’t enjoy the story so I couldn’t give it more stars.

This was my third or fourth read of this magnificent book by Jim Grimsley. My reaction was so similar to other reviewers who posted here, I don’t know if I have anything new to add. But as I am the person who doesn’t believe in life after death, heaven and miracles, there is nothing good at all in the ending of the story.

On the face of it this seems like a love story between two teenagers but I felt that Roy ,the love interest, was rather controlling and that his first overtures towards Nathan were bordering on ‘grooming’. I had been comparing them with MaLec, my lead ship from TMI, almost from the beginning, but I realized that that wasn’t getting me anywhere but to despising the book even more.

Almost without realizing it and with some reluctance on both sidesthey begin an achingly tender romance. Why did the father turn from normal to brutal at some point in the boy’s life? I also ‘loved’ that Nathan’s parents were just Mom and Dad. Drea a seemingly well-adjusted heterosexual with a normal family and a girlfriend, so it’s not at all clear what brings him into the younger boy’s ken, and this want of motive makes him appear all the more mysterious and ethereal in Nathan’s eyes.
