He obviously loves his subject and knows more about it than just about anyone. A great book giving different paths of meditation.
How to Meditate
While not discrediting the practice itself, he earned a lot of credibility in my opinion by showing that he has a good head about himself. In other words, if you think that meditation is only for hippie-types who believe in auras and astral planes, this book may convince you otherwise. This wasn’t really a problem though and the author actually warns the reader in the beginning of that chapter that ‘you might not care about this subject’ and lets you know that ‘it’s okay to skip to the next chapter without missing anything’.
There are a couple of chapters devoted to ideas that people believe that both have little evidence of grounding in reality and which detract from meditation. There is a long afterword by Edgar N. This is where it’s important to be incisive and separate the gold from the rubbish, there is some good ideas on again exercising that focus for getting a greater mental clarity.

The last two chapters and the Afterword seem to have been added for the twin-fold purpose of hitting a target page count and to add a couple of niche audiences—namely students of psychology and fans of Edgar N. This book takes a brief but very detailed look at meditation. Other than the stuff about ESP, I found this to be a wonderful and helpful book.
The book also tries to tie up the ancient practices with the current psycho-analytical practices. For me personally I do meditation for the very practical effects of it, I feel a sharper focus, more clarity in my thoughts, less emotional reactivity, more centered, more aware of my thought patterns and feelings He also keeps things nice and simple. If you want to know how to meditate, this is a good book to pick up.
Most of the meditation techniques found in this book are so simple I’m sure many already practice it.

It includes the essence of different philosophies of the world including mind boggling variety of Indian methods, Sufi etc. The core of the book is chapter 8, which explains how to do meditations of eleven different kinds.
It begins with a chapter on why one should meditate. I’ll probably refer back to this text often. He is the bestselling author of a wide-ranging series of books on science, medicine, and psychology.
