I’m going to swap out my cart reader with one from ebay. When buying a used VFX you should know about this and be certain that the keyboard you buy has had this done. Several soft buttons are intermittently non-functional, The VFX keyboard problems can be solved by the hardwired keyboard fix.

I have a SyQuest SyJet 1. The VFX is the first all-digital synthesizer created by Ensoniq. Under the keyboard proper, there are 3 ensoni boards that control the poly-key tm pressure.
The VFX contains a set of 17 transwaves that can be used for wave sequencing. Over time and use, the keyboard begins to sag a little bit and this connector eventually starts to corrode get dirtycome loose and the like. One thing that’s kind of quirky, the sequencer’s operating system gets loaded into the instrument’s RAM memory from floppy disk they replaced the bulky and proprietary cartridges of the VFX with a standard 3.
Follow the instructions below only if you know what you’re doing. This allowed Ensoniq to provide new operating systems that you could load in real easily.

Keyboard – 61 keys velocity and polyphonic aftertouch. There’s even a built-in bit VLSI dual effects processor with reverb, chorus, flanging, and delay. This is one of those manuals that was impossible to find on the ‘net in digital form.
Ensoniq has determined that hard-wiring that connection solves the problem. I removed all the keys, WAV samples are available on freewavesamples. Functions fine except for one dead key the E in the octave above middle C. Polyphony – 21 voices. But will I have trouble with this? Wavetable has waveforms multi-sampled acoustic instruments, sustained waveforms, harmonic and inharmonic structures.
Envelopes – 3 stage envelopes. Like ribbon cable length issues etc. The VFX has a cartridge port as well, for storing sounds onto Ensoniq’s proprietary media. Date Produced – The synth also has full MIDI implementation with 12 channels for multitimbral functions.
Someone had the problem that the display would come up, and then ensonoq partially draw the “initializing” message, and then hang.
