It’s that old type of fantasy where there’s a lot of backstory, a lot of telling, and it bounces around in 3rd person omniscient to keep some distance from the characters emotionally. I can’t get enough of Jones’ quirky writing. We have the typical tyrannical government, a few scattered rebellions, and an annual festival where the citizens throw dummies of a god and goddess into the ocean for luck.
