Why did I give this two stars the first time I read it? He is still the coward and inveterate schlimazel of the earlier books, but he now carries the plot rather than simply floating along with it like a jellyfish.
There are once again some great jokes, but many of them felt in one or two parts of the book and then longer stretches where I didn’t even chuckle. There were some really funny parts and snippets of awesome. US Cover Could anything actually get that desperate? As an afterthought, I was thinking about Rincewind in relations to Pratchett, himself.

Please feel free to draw your own. However, the Archchancellor’s hat, the symbol of supreme magical power at the University, has some ideas of its own. I love Mort, but I can just about recite it at this point; I didn’t need to reread it.
Bitter over this fate, Ipslore vows to take revenge upon the wizards through his eighth son, Coin. Having the experience of many previous Archchancellors, the hat proves an even match for Sourcery empowered wizards, fighting off a group of them and enlisting others to its cause. Who of course, was a source of magic — a sourcerer. This one was a struggle. The adventure seemed good, but it was really focused on the zingers just a tad too much and I got tired of them. Laugh this one off. Pratchett populates this entry with many familiar characters disccworld as The Soufcery, Nijel the Destroyer and Conina the Hairdresser, daughter of Cohen the Barbarian, the luggage and, of course, Death. When Death comes to collect Ipslore’s soul, he escapes by placing his spirit into his staff as he hands it over.

The story is similar in many ways to both The Light Fantastic and Equal Ritesbut un Sourcery, the fifth book in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, marks his first real triumph. As such, I enjoyed this one and particularly like the character of Rincewind who is discwor,d central figure of this story. Once I realized this is what was bothering me, I seemed to start enjoying the book more.

While not quite as good as Mort discwoorld, it’s still obvious that the writing is getting better, the characters more creative, the world more lively. Next book Wyrd Sisters. I spent more time counting off pages to completion than I did on reading it.
