It’s certainly not “rigorous” by a long shot, but it does what it silvxnus out to do: It’s fun when someone loves the subject so much. One thing I enjoyed about working my way through this book was that the exercises given at the calulus of the chapters was exceedingly difficult.
I’ve worked my way through another calculus text because of it and am able to understand discussions about aspects of calculus in other math books as well.

Mad props for being the first calculus text Ssilvanus didn’t hate, and actually being fun. The book has real simple language and of course since this a book about an advanced concept, the reader is expected to have some background in Mathematics.

Hence I picked up this book. Gardner covers some of the issues that have been addressed in the teaching of higher math, and he makes no bones about the need to encourage rather than discourage those who can most benefit from having a practical knowledge of this powerful mathematical tool.
Want to Read saving…. It can madd freely accessed on Project Gutenberg. It would’ve made it the book better if it had a chapter on Limits as well. Available for free on project Gutenberg as a beautifully typeset PDF, this amazing little book presents the most fundamental ideas of the calculus in a surprisingly approachable way.
Yes, he modernized the terminology and that’s somewhat useful, but it comes at the price of new typos compared to the edition. Thompson was both irreverent and witty in his development of the subject. Calculus Made Easy has long been the most popular calculus primer, and this major revision of the classic math text makes the subject at hand still more comprehensible to readers of all levels.
Calculus Made Easy demystifies the concepts and clearly explains the symbols and language of differentiation and integration. The author acknowledges that the language of calculus thojpson obtuse and pokes some fun at the mathematicians that came up with. It made me think of all the abstractions which were equally ‘correct’ that lost out over the years. The style is conversational, even breezy.
Calculus Made Easy ignores the use of limits with its epsilon-delta definitionreplacing it with a method of approximating to arbitrary precision directly to the correct answer in the infinitesimal spirit of Leibniznow formally justified in modern non-standard analysis and smooth infinitesimal analysis.

This book was written for school kids back in It’s still not that easy, but – as Martin Gardner explains in ghompson introduction – this book still outshines any textbook in terms of accessibility and simplicity.
