For instance, I like how the book explains the differences among theorems, lemmas, corollaries, and propositions, since students sometimes are confused by such labels. I think this is a real shame — a price we have paid collectively for emphasizing mathematics chiefly as a technocratic and scientific problem solving discipline as opposed to a humanistic and democratic problem framing one — but this is not a stick I wish to beat this text with, or at least this text bpok.

I also wish there was a bit more history after the critical technical information. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands.

Customers who bought this item also bought. Thiswill prepare you for advanced mathematics courses, for you will be betterable peoof understand proofs, write your own proofs and think critically andinquisitively about mathematics.

The approach in teaching the various proof outlines is especially relevant to novice proof-writers, particularly in Chapter 4 where illustrations show a proof being constructed, step by step, from the outline. My one minor criticism is that I think proof by induction could have used more attention, but you can supplement that elsewhere if you have the need or the urge.

Questions of this nature belong to thetheoretical realm of mathematics. I use this book for a “Discrete Mathematics for Educators” course. Of course, it almost goes without saying that if you elect self-study, you’ve got to pay attention and work at things.

I have contacted the author about one typographical error I found during my reading, but it is error-free for the majority of the textbook. Hammack literally starts at the beginning, with the basics of notation, sets, logic, etc.

I have used this book as the primary text for such a course twice, a course with two main goals: How to Think About Analysis. The book ends with additional topics in relations, functions, and cardinality of sets. But there is another approach to mathematics that is more theoreticalthan computational.

The writing style of the text is best described as direct. May 28, Ramesh marked it as to-read. Brynjar rated it it was amazing Dec 07, The definitions, theorems, and examples given, as well as the notation used, are good, standard, and well presented.

As a book used to transition students to upper level mathematics, this book does hook very nice job of calling out mathematical language norms and writing norms.

But I’m finding the payoff is high. Top Reviews Most recent Top Rihcard. Hover on the chapter title to see the subsections.

Amazon Rapids Fun stories for kids on the go. I think this book is a classic and any autodidact that doesn’t already know how to read and do proofs should spend four months of their life picking up the fundamentals from this book.

This is a wonderful book. In this approach, the primary goal is to understandmathematical structures, to prove mathematical statements, and evento invent or discover new mathematical theorems and theories. I contend that these are very significant things, and that they are sufficient for anyone teaching a course of this nature to consider adopting this text. I see no reason not to at least add it as a supplemental text – not just in the “transitions” course, but for other courses where students will be struggling with the same issues, eg.

Also, since it is free I feel find going “off script” for a while – when I use an expensive text, I feel like I should make the most of the text for the students.

A native of rural southern Virginia, he studied painting at Rhode Island School of Design before an interest in computer graphics and visualization led him to mathematics.

Then, the book moves on to standard proof Luis Cota rated it really liked it Jul 17, The book is quite clear in explaining the various topics covered, particularly when it comes to set theory and basic proof techniques.

This is probably the best and most well-structured maths textbook I came across it is also superlight and I just love it! Comments I really enjoy this book and love that it is free for hammac, students.
