This book along with with his collected short stories are true classics that will stand the test of time. Every time there was a glimmer of hope, there was something to extinguish it.
Malamud is not the type of writer to sugar-coat anything. Yet Yakov remains nernard focus of this tale and that is the strength. In addition, reading right smack dab in the middle of the book makes me abandon myself to the antagonists: Malamud makes us face how easy it is to use race as a motive for hatred.
